Mexico’s most dynamic sectors have been in non-oil related manufactured goods. In fact, manufactured goods account for more than 85% of total exports, and exports now account for 30% of Mexico’s GDP. In addition, Mexico-U.S. trade reached a record high of $215 billion in 1999. More evidence of Mexico’s economic growth is it has recently become one of the world’s largest apparel exporters, and ranks as the world’s 11th largest agriculture producer, 9th mining producer, and 6th natural gas producer. This renewed economic dynamism has created momentum for commercial and direct foreign investment growth, and is expected to continue in the future due to the attractive value of the peso, privatization, modernization of industry and further reductions in import duties for Mexican products under NAFTA.
